Rugs are usually smaller than carpets and do not exceed more than 6.5 feet and have multiple uses. They can be laid on the floor, hung on walls, used as prayer rugs.

Carpets are usually anything larger than 6.5 feet and are primarily used as floor coverings. Carpets as floor coverings have a life time of about two to three years and then need to be changed.

Carpets with their beautiful designs and patterns help in decorating the interiors to a large extent. Another advantage of using carpets is the softness you feel when you step down on the floor. This feeling of softness below your feet makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. Carpets help to absorb noise and reduce echo that will come into your room. They also help in reducing injuries from accidents.

Carpets fall into two categories: handmade carpets and manufactured carpets.

Handmade carpets are usually made from natural fabric such as wool, cotton, silk. These fabrics are dyed and stitched with other materials to make carpets. Handmade carpets are generally more expensive than all other categories because they require time and labour to produce. Manufactured carpets are mass produced with the help of machines. They are obviously cheaper than handmade carpets and are generally used in commercial establishments. These days a new variety of carpet is in vogue which is known as the "carpet tile". In such a type of carpet you have the flexibility to replace only the piece that is broken or no longer used thus saving the homeowner of the expense of replacing an entire carpet. However such types of carpets are very expensive and therefore not very popular.

Avoid using carpets in areas that are heavily used or dirty. Carpets are available in soft, dark and moderate color tones. Carpets with a soft color tone will make your room look larger but the disadvantage is that if they get stained the spots will become prominent.

Carpets with a dark color tone will make your room look dim and private. Dark color tone hides stains and spots on the carpet. Carpets with a moderate color tone are the best and can be easily arranged with other furniture and fixtures in the room.
